Chairman candidates must deposit Tk 25,000 and can spend up to Tk 10 lakh

The Election Commission (EC) has increased the security deposit for Union Parishad election candidates. Chairman candidates must now deposit Tk 25,000, up from Tk 5,000, while member candidates must deposit Tk 5,000, up from Tk 1,000. Under the amended rules, the maximum campaign expenditure has been set at Tk 10 lakh for chairman candidates and Tk two lakh for member candidates. Candidates who fail to secure at least 15 percent of the votes cast will forfeit their deposits. The EC published the gazette amending the Union Parishad Election Rules, 2026, on September 17. The gazette was signed by EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed.

Meeting focuses on security preparations and coordination for local govt polls.

Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir today met Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin to discuss law enforcement preparations ahead of the local government elections. “We discussed preparations for the local government elections. We also discussed forming a law enforcement cell in coordination with the commission,” the IGP told reporters after the meeting. The meeting began around 1:45pm at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka. The IGP said the commission had asked police to prepare a report on the law and order situation ahead of the elections. The report will be submitted to the commission within one or two days, he added.

Petitioner moves Appellate Division seeking stay on presidential election a day after HC rejected writ petition. 

Supreme Court lawyer Md Eunus Ali Akond today filed a petition with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court challenging a High Court order that cleared the way for the presidential election scheduled for tomorrow. The HC yesterday summarily rejected a writ petition that challenged the constitutional validity of Article 70 and sought a stay on the election schedule.

According to Article 70, a parliamentary seat would become vacant if the respective lawmaker resigns from or votes against the political party that nominated them. In his petition before the Appellate Division, Eunus Ali sought a stay on the presidential election schedule.

দেশের ২৩তম রাষ্ট্রপতি নির্বাচনে ‘নির্বাচনি কর্তা’ প্রধান নির্বাচন কমিশনার (সিইসি) এ এম এম নাসির উদ্দিনের সহায়ক কর্মকর্তা ইসির সিনিয়র সচিব আখতারসহ ২০ কর্মকর্তাকে নিয়োগ দিয়েছে নির্বাচন কমিশন (ইসি)। মঙ্গলবার (১৮ আগস্ট) সহায়ক কর্মকর্তা নিয়োগের এ তথ্য জানিয়েছেন ইসি কর্মকর্তারা।

ইসি উপসচিব মোহাম্মদ মুনির হোসেনের সই করা এ-সংক্রান্ত অফিস আদেশে বলা হয়, আগামী ২০ আগস্ট অনুষ্ঠিতব্য রাষ্ট্রপতি নির্বাচন সুষ্ঠুভাবে সম্পন্ন করতে ২০ কর্মকর্তাকে দায়িত্ব দিয়েছে কমিশন। ভোটগ্রহণের দিন নির্বাচনি কর্তাকে দাপ্তরিক সহায়তা দেওয়ার জন্য এসব কর্মকর্তাকে নিয়োগ করা হয়েছে।

A meeting of the members of parliament has been scheduled at 2:00 pm on August 20 to hold the election for the President. Chief Election Commissioner and Election Officer for the President Election-2026 A M M Nasir Uddin issued a notice in this regard today. The meeting was called under the authority conferred by Section 5(3) of the Presidential Election Act, 1991, and after consultation with the Speaker.

The notice said, "The meeting of the members of parliament for the election of the President will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, August 20 in the Parliament Chamber of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital." The information was disclosed today in a notification signed by Senior Secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat Akhtar Ahmed.

The notification said the meeting of the members of parliament was called for the polling in the presidential election in continuation of the notification issued by the Election Commission Secretariat on August 6.
